Greyhawk News You Can Use - Harvester 2025 Edition

I’m well-overdue for another Greyhawk news roundup, and a recent post by /u/talktoh in /r/Greyhawk prompted me to complete catchup on Greyhawk news for the past several months!

This post assembles news items I’ve curated in draft blog posts for awhile now alongside some hot-of-the-presses news that has caught my eye.

Memorials

The Passing of François Marcela-Froideval

Frank Mentzer reported on Facebook the sad news about the death of François Marcela-Froideval on 17 June 2025.  I didn't know him personally, but I have purchased a few of his Black Moon Chronicles graphic novels, and fondly recall Gary Gygax writing about their projects together in Dragon Magazine columns.  My condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

For fans of the Black Moon Chronicles (Chroniques de la Lune Noire), Olivier Ledroit, one of the main artists of the series (all covers, interiors of 5 issues) mentioned on Facebook that the next volume in the series is due to release before year-end.  The author, François Marcela-Froideval just passed away a couple of months ago in June, so it's likely this will be the last volume in the series.

I lightly edited Kit's announcement.

Jennell Jaquays Update

Return to Perinthos
released in June, and the project coordinator Violet shared a new update on 28 August 2025 that mentions, in part:

We have one final spread that was a miscommunication in editing, it's being added this week, and it's getting out. I can't wait to have it finished.

We'll also have the physical edition live on our shop, we have a small number of copies to sell to support Trans Lifeline there too. We're in the midst of a redesign of this site, but it'll be ready soon too.

My project release update from June provides a preview of the Return to Perinthos book too.

OSR News

Matt Finch announced on 27 August 2025 the release of the current draft of the OSRIC 3.0 Players Guide content (also lightly edited):

We have just posted a manuscript draft of the full Player Guide for OSRIC 3.  This draft includes the changes I made to chapters 1-4 based on comments from all of you!  This is for those of you who are AD&D rules experts or editors to make comments that will catch issues before we go to layout.

Ever & Anon (E&A) is the APA spiritual successor to Alarums & Excursions, which Lee Gold announced that she was retiring from in May 2025.  Lee offered very-appreciated assistance in the publication of our Black Blade Tales of Peril collection.  Chaosium published Rick Meints’ warm tribute, among many others offered by fans and contriubtors; captainjapan at ODD74 shared a lovely video interview with Lee from 7 Sept 2022, and James Malizewski conducted an April 2009 interview at Grognardia.

In the same ODD74 discussion, Attronarch mentioned that the new monthly APA was forming to continue A&E’s long tradition, and three issues have released thus far:
  • Issue #3, September 2025
  • Issue #2, August 2025
  • Issue #1, July 2025

Gary’s World
is an ongoing free 1e zine published by Vince Garcia in the Files section of the First Edition AD&D (Gygaxian AD&D) Facebook group.  The group is private, so you'll need to request membership to access the files.  Vince has produced fourteen issues since August 2024, ranging in size from 53 to 263 pages per issue!  Issue #14 just debuted on 30 August 2025, so get it while it’s hot!

Trent Smith’s Brink of Calamity Greyhawk-ready AD&D 1e campaign setting—it slots in nicely into the northern Wild Coast—was reviewed on 30 August 2025 by Bryce Lynch at tenfootpole.org with a “no regrets” rating, Bryce’s second-highest rank.  If you’re considering using it in your home campaign, Michael “Zudrak” Gross has been decoding Trent’s Greyhawk-equivalent names in a thread on Dragonsfoot.

casl Entertainment New Greyhawk Releases

Carlos Lising is a bright light among Greyhawk fandom, and his newly-released titles that caught my eye include:
  • LF2 The Kaldonna Offensive:  Like a pinprick of light floating in an ocean of night, so stands the village of Kaldonna upon the devastated landscape of the See of Vanthrace. Eager to complete their murder of the nation, the Great Empire's army closes in upon the settlement as the noose circles the neck of the condemned. Can your heroes avert disaster and represent salvation for those refugees huddling for safety within Kaldonna's ramshackle walls?    LF2 presents the second chapter in the Legio Fatis Campaign series begun with LF1 The 9 (which I playtested four years ago at Virtual GaryCon 2021, and thoroughly enjoyed then and in our post-convention follow-up sessions).
  • G5 In the Hall of the Mountain Queen:  The Grand Duchy of Geff is a war-torn and beleaguered place. Yet an opportunity to break the back of the monstrous army that holds the land and its folk under the yoke of servitude has arisen! Do your PCs have the courage and mettle to turn the tide of war against the giants -- and put an end to their terrible reign?
  • A10 Crescendo & Coda:  This module represents the thrilling finale to the Flesh Traders series of adventure modules in A5 - A9. It can be used as a sequel to the Saga of the Flesh Traders or as a stand-alone adventure.
The titles above do not do not scratch the surface of Carlos’ recent publications, which you can review in full on the casl Entertainment adventures web site.

Greyhawk Releases at DMs Guild

There are a lot of Greyhawk-related or -inspired releases at DMs Guild—far too many for me to track with any depth—so these are a sampling of ones that have pinged recently in my radar:
  • DB1 - The Burneal and the North by Derek Long, a 75 page gazetteer for the region; Derek has three other Greyhawk sourcebooks, including one on Schwartzenbruin and another on the Rhenne
  • Rick "Duicarthan" Miller has published two Greyhawk titles:  Vale of the Mage Gazetteer and Magic Items Compendium (hundreds of Greyhawk campaign magical, including references to source material to expedite research)

Cannibaal Publishing News

Troy Alleman has been publishing new Greyhawk materials on DMs Guild and the Cannibbaal Publishing web site, including some newly-announced content:
  • Forgotten Tomb of Acererak, which was also recently promoted on Greycast:  the Cairn Hills are a mysterious place with untapped stories to tell; we captured the essence of this place and expanded the lore of the area and the complicated relationship there between Greyhawk and Urnst
  • The Telchuria gazetteer is being worked on currently; expect more news by December/January; when completed, you can explore the frozen tundra and wastelands of the north pole of Oerth

Secrets of Blackmoor, Rob Kuntz, and ArneCon 3 News

I mentioned both Rob Kuntz’s new PDF release Into the Wild Blue Yonder: A Journey Through Blackmoor’s Dark Realm and the new Blackmoor Foundations books in my GaryCon 2025 report, but they’re worth reiterating!

Rob also created a new reddit board at https://www.reddit.com/r/Classic_RPG_History/new/ to keep up on current events from his side of the Atlantic.

Griff is also continuing to organize Arnecon 3 from 10-12 October 2025.  Rob will not be attending this year, but the convention still looks like a wonderful time if you can attend!

Greyhawk Fanzines, Podcasts, and LiveStreams

Greyhawk fanzines and publications have a long tradition dating back to the dawn of the 1990s internet, and have gained new traction with new titles released in the past year.

Fanzines

  • Greyhawk Grimoire released issue #5 on 30 June 2025, and issue #6 is in the works with Rick “Duicarthan” Miller recently joining the staff as their new layout and design resource (Rick was the longest-duration editor for the Oerth Journal)
  • Samuel “Samwise” Weiss has been sharing his own take on “The New Canon” on the Greyhawk Grimoire site too, in several short and lengthier essays spanning a variety of demographic and historical topics (and in GG itself, too)
  • Oerth Journal #37 and Visions of Greyhawk #4 are both still in the works and I will have pieces included in each zine; many great issues in the back catalog are well-worth checking out if you’ve not done so before!

Podcasts and LiveStreams

Greyhawk is blessed with fans who publish in many formats, including podcast and livestreams:
  • Greycast continues to deliver the goods, with recent podcast topics covering The Circle of Eight, the Free City of Rel Astra, with Matt Finch guesting to discuss OSRIC 3.0, and a couple of older but still-recent-ish Duchy and County of Urnst, and hosting the crew who produced the World of Greyhawk Gazetteer Revised back in December 2024, with many others to check out too
  • Paul Stormberg’s 14-part D&D history podcast When We Were Wizards (available on most major platforms) explores Gary Gygax, D&D, and TSR Hobbies, the cultural impact of D&D, and the profound personal impact it had on Gary, his family, friends, and colleagues. The series tells the story with the voices of the people who were there, through never before released interviews, personal letters, and internal company documents.
  • Jay Scott, Anna Meyer, and Mike Bridges interview Erik Mona and Gary Holian on  Legends & Lore #308, who discuss the publishing history and content of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer; other recent and cool topics include a deep dive on the GH98 Player’s Guide to Greyhawk, and the Nyr Dyv and its Surrounding Lands, amongst many others!
  • On 16 December 2024, I was interviewed by Ben “Through Ultan’s Door” Lawrence for the second season of his Into the Megadungeon podcast.  We had a fun discussion about mega-dungeons in general and Castle Greyhawk in its many incarnations--including some long-time recurring dreams I've had about such environs--and I’ll share the relevant details when the episode posts :D

grodog in Fight On! Magazine

Issues #15 and #16 of Fight On! Magazine are published now, and #17 is in layout at the time of this writing:
  • Issue 15 (July 2024) is thematically dedicated to J. Eric Holmes, editor of the 1977 original Basic Set ("Holmes Basic") and follows on the heels of #14, published in April 2014, so #15 marks a wonderful return to publishing after a 10-year hiatus!  Issue 15 features one of one of my previously-unpublished Castle Greyhawk dungeon maps (“The Recessed Gallery Level”) and my D&D origin story as part of a Holmes Basic panel interview with Aron Clark about his new OSR clone, Holmes & Clark
  • Issue 16 (February 2025) is dedicated to David A. Trampier and presents Allan’s “Giants in the Earth” article detailing Wormy, Irving, Ace, Gremorly, Solomoriah, and the rest of the Trampier’s beloved characters in AD&D format.
  • Issue 17 (soon forthcoming!) will include some of my new monster designs, and a piece on the history of the OD&D thoul (including my own rendition of it for AD&D)
Coincidentally, Prince of Nothing recently reviewed Fight On! #4, too.

Tales of Peril, Second Edition

Unfortunately Tales of Peril v2 will not be ready in September-ish 2025 as I hoped; we're still working through legalities to try to secure one new content item, so I've taken the extra time to work on more content updates:
  • I've comprehensively re-edited all of Maze of Peril and “Trollshead,” with “The Sorcerer's Jewel” in-progress; I intend to reedit "In the Bag" and perhaps “Witch Doctor,” if it needs it (it will at least be proofread again)
  • I've also finished re-proofreading “Confessions of a Dungeon Master” and Chris’ “Boinger & Zereth PC Summaries,” with Eric Frazier's and Zach Howard's essays in queue
  • I've not reedited the A&E pieces since ToP is basically their only record outside of A&E itself, so they'll remain untouched editing-wise (although they will also be re-proofed)
We plan to include a new B&Z short story written and illustrated by Chris Holmes, and should have some new additions to Eric's and Zach's essays, along with another new JEH non-fiction piece discovered by Zach.

We're also planning to issue the book in a TBD electronic format, to help with overseas folks and those who prefer e-readers.

I don't have a new target date for publication, but it seems likely that we'll not release it until GaryCon in March 2026, perhaps by year-end if things come together more-quickly than they have to date, but I'm not holding my breath ;)

If you are interested in the reprint, you can email Black Blade Publishing at tacojohndm@yahoo.com to ask to be notified when the reprint will be available.

grodog’s Virtual GreyhawkCon 6 Events

Event registration began yesterday for Virtual GreyhawkCon 6, and I managed to submit my events at the last minute yet-again.  This year I’m running three events, playing in three, and participating in the closing ceremonies panel, so it’ll be a fun and full weekend filled with ‘hawk :D

I’m DMing two different playtest sessions for my “The Gnoll Raiders’ Cairn” event, one with PCs of levels 3rd-5th on Friday (there’s still one seat open as of the time of this writing), and a second on Saturday with 4th-7th pregens:
LEGIO V - Explore grodog’s Greyhawk – The Gnoll Raiders’ Cairn

Explore grodog's Greyhawk campaign in a playtest for an upcoming scenario my crew may delve soon! Particularly-ferocious gnoll bands destroyed a Fort Gellner patrol, and looted three merchant and mining caravans en route to the City of Greyhawk, striking along the Urnst Trail between the Fluted Cairn and the Shrine of St. Cuthbert by the Lake. Flinds are suspected to lead them. Tracked to a newly-discovered cavern with a corkscrewing, descending stair, the party is hired to clear out the gnolls’ deep and recover the merchant wares. A reward of 10% of the value of the recovered goods and the waiver of all treasure taxes is sure to enrich your coffers!

Bring your graph paper, dice, and a healthy dose of paranoid courage! 3rd-5th level pregen characters provided.

The Lake Geneva Legio V began as a handful of gamers who attended Gary Con and the North Texas RPG Con since their inceptions. We have grown over the past few years to include like-minded individuals united by a respect for Gary Gygax and his legacy. We are the dedicated attendees who love conventions for the camaraderie they establish, the Game Masters who run games that span the decades, and the committed gamers who spend these four days in a fervor of dice rolling and old-school good times.

Although events run as LEGIO V Presents use a variety of rule systems, our focus is on games authored by Gary and his contemporaries as well as those systems whose designers pay homage to these pioneers.
This is (probably) the first time that I’m playtesting a convention scenario before I run it in my home group—I say “probably” only because you never know how things go at the table:  now that I’ve mentioned the timing in this order, the players will likely jump on the scenario before the con now ;)  I’ve playtested many scenarios in regular campaign play before DMing them at cons, but since I whipped this adventure up as a result of some recent writing for Fight On! Magazine’s forthcoming issue #17, and thought it might be a bit more than the current PCs could reasonably tackle, I decided a playtest was in order.  I’ll report back on how it goes, and how the PCs fare if they decide to pick up this particular plot hook.

A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity is a TSR classic I look forward to DMing again (and in possible preparation for inclusion in Henry’s solo aquatic campaign), and it’s the first module I bought with my own funds as a kid, earned by working childhood paper routes and lining baseball fields:

LEGIO V - Explore grodog’s Greyhawk – A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity

For years coastal settlements along the Sea of Gearnat have been pillaged and looted by the marauders of the yellow sails, but recently attacks have grown more frequent and vicious, with entire villages disappearing overnight! Recruited to root out and destroy the source of these raids, you and your fellow adventurers have traced the slavers to a fortified compound in the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Highport, in despoiled Pomarj.

This classic TSR scenario will be run and scored in tournament style. Bring your graph paper, dice, and a healthy dose of paranoid courage! 4th-6th level pregen characters provided.

My gaming schedule includes the following events, which I was quite thankful to get into during event registration yesterday morning:

Friday Night @ 7pm:  Grendelwulf’s Repose by Carlos Lising:  Heroes of Oerth worthy of the name know that Lord Grendelwulf of Sunndi has shed off his mortality to meet his gods. It should come as no surprise that a man such as he would make many enemies during the course of his life. Can your characters see to it that Grendelwulf's rest remains undisturbed? A World of Greyhawk adventure for character levels 8-12.

This is a session that Carlos designed to honor and memorialize Gaetano LeFavi’s recent passing.  I played in his Ethereal GaryCon 2021 game “Unhallowed Halls of the Sorcerer King” (summarized at https://grodog.blogspot.com/2021/04/grodog-post-garycon-xiii-repose-part-2.html), and enjoyed his many contributions to the Greyhawk community over the years, not least of which was his Gygax's Legendarium blog, which is now only available via the Internet Archive.

As usual, I look forward to Carlos’ games—he’s an excellent DM, and brings his love for 1e and Greyhawk to the fore in his adventures!

Saturday I have two back-to-back games in the morning:

8am (there’s still one seat open as of the time of this writing) Sunken City: Presented by Dice and a Pencil and DM’d by Brian Jagusak:  Sunken City by Robert J Kuntz was originally used as the 1st Dungeons and Dragons tournament at GenCon VIII in 1975! Will your exploration of the sunken city of Kalibruhn lead to riches and renown, or an untimely death? Join to find out! Pre-gens will be provided!

I’ve played many of Rob Kuntz’s dungeons over the years, but I’ve not played this one yet, and look forward to the experience!—it’s a particularly interesting scenario to me, given that it’s set in a partially-inundated coastal city where the tidal levels factor into PC access to the ruins.  I’ve not played with Brian before, but look forward to his rendition of the module!

...and in the afternoon:

Noon (full event) An Ancient, Bloody Bond by Les “OblivionSeeker” Reno:  576 CY. Ade Swarndeth, a retired Shield Lands scout, asks for the party's help. Two years ago, renegade orc cultists allied with the Horned Society raided Ade's sister's farm, taking his nephew and killing the rest of the family. He has a lead on the child's whereabouts. But with secrets older than the earliest human blood in play, this is no simple rescue mission...

A tie-in with Luke Gygax Presents Melf's Guide to Greyhawk, Volume One: The Borderlands of Iuz, this session has connections with "The Deadsinger of Molag" but requires no knowledge of that adventure. Modified 5E rules, for Levels 5-10.

Les’ earlier Deadsinger event unfortunately conflicted with Carlos’ game on Friday night, so I’ll only get to play this session.  Les is a DM who foregrounds the darker greys of Greyhawk in his take on the setting, which always makes for fun and interesting adventures!  I’ve played some 5e—mostly with Henry DMing the game with his brother Ethan and me— but I think this’ll be my first 5e convention game.

I’ll wrap up the con on Sunday night at the 6pm Ask the Experts panel discussion which closes the convention, and is always fun!

I wasn’t able to attend vGHC last year due to my USPS work schedule conflicting throughout the weekend, so I’m looking forward to playing and visiting with the community once more!

If you’ve not registered yet there’s still plenty of time to do so, both to submit your own games (there are 47 on the schedule at the time of this writing) and to play too!

Next Up for grodog

After vGHC, the remainder of my winter schedule is light so I plan to fill the rest of 2025 with editing, writing, and designing.  I have a few projects to complete in the near-term, including wrapping up my essay on using Anthony Huso’s adventures in Greyhawk (to appear in the forthcoming Saving Throw Zine #2), then the textual updates for Tales of Peril 2nd Edition I mentioned above.  Afterward I plan to pickup development work again on some of my Castle Greyhawk levels, which will carry me through into the spring I imagine.  Hopefully I can participate at GaryCon again in March 2026—we’ll see, since it grows less definite to attend given our family’s reduced financial circumstances, so I may need to pull the plug in 2026.  We’ll see….

Until the next town crier wanders by!

Allan.

The grodog Thither and Hither and Points Between

While the blog and I have languished together in torpid stupor for quite some time now, the blog's silence did not originate in or from wordslessness, but for good reasons that I will delve into soon.  And in case you missed it, this is not in fact my first post in the past ten months ;)

In the meanwhile, we have some catching up to do!

The Recent Past and Near Future

GaryCon XVII - 18 to 24 March 2025

GaryCon was, as always, a mixture of a lot of work and lot of fun.  The fun, as usual, overweighted the work, which is always a good thing and helps me know that it continues to be worth the effort to attend while juggling our Black Blade Publishing booth, playing games, and catching up with friends:  the balance still tilts the fun to the positive for all three, which is a very good thing indeed.

GaryCon 17 badge and pins

As always, we appreciate the assistance from Rich Franks and Victor Raymond while running the booth, and from fellow gamers and volunteers in setting it up and tearing it down too.  This year, Gilbert Ganse, and Joe Mac helped us set up and tear down in record time!

This year, I played West End Games' Star Wars d6 game for the first time (and using its first edition, in case that matters):

Star Wars d6 (West End Games) - 1987 original edition
Star Wars d6 (West End Games) -
1987 original edition

Star Wars d6 (West End Games) - 1996 revised & expanded 2nd edition
Star Wars d6 (West End Games) -
1996 revised & expanded 2nd edition

While I own both the 1987 original edition and the 1996 Revised & Expanded 2nd edition (which is, I admit, the default I see in my mind's eye), I've never had the pleasure of playing either version before, and I've never played on the same of the screen in the esteemed company of Handy Haversack and his NYC crew---Ross Peabody, Rob Skarbek, Manny, (and maybe Iain too?), along with Chris Kusel, Jim Lohman, Richard Keene---and the rest of the table of diehard gamers on Saturday night at GaryCon in Bluegnoll's "Star Wars: I Got a Bad Feeling About This" event:

Rumors are quietly circulating of an Imperial admiral wanting to defect, but their identity is a well guarded secret. Alliance Intelligence has sent your group to infiltrate an outer rim Imperial base where an unusual meeting of Imperial Navy, Army and Intelligence officials is under way. A local Hutt Cartel smuggler, receptive to Alliance overtures for assistance, has made for strange bedfellows.

My character---anagrammished from my names as Nallorg Godor---was an outlaw (I didn't fix his name on the PC sheet until after snapping the picture, seemingly, and I didn't think to shoot the PC sheet again at the end of the session either, alas:

grodog's first Star Wars character---
an Outlaw named not-Amos!

David used miniatures and scatter terrain with a 1950s road-atlas-sized-, comb-bound book of SF battlemats that admirably set the scene:

The grodog's first Star Wars game!---
our finale battle!

With three additional pics graciously provided by Handy Haversack:

We had a great time, and many thanks to David for finding room for me in the game, and to Handy and crew for letting me crash their party, quite literally!

In addition to playing Star Warson Wednesday night I also returned to Greyhawk's Perrenland in Carlos Lising's ongoing The Wolves of St. Cuthbert campaign, which was fun as always.  I really enjoy gaming with this crew, which features a fun mix of heady role-playing, tactical chaos, and Greyhawk shenanigans.

On Friday night, I helped to DM Paul Stormberg's Friday night Legends of Rolepaying tournament.  This year's scenario was a sequel to Allen Hammack's C2 Ghost Tower of Inverness, and was, as usual, quite fun to DM.  The crew at my table (one of 16 tables, for a total count of about 144 players this year) included several folks new to playing AD&D 1e, which is always a treat :D

grodog hard at work,
DMing "Dungeons of the Ghost Tower"

On Sunday night, my business partner Jon Hershberger ran Paul Reiche III's "The Temple of Poseidon" from Dragon Magazine #46 (February 1981) for our Legio V crew of miscreants, which was also fun.  Jon's not only an excellent DM, but he wrangles the Legio crew like a pro!

North Texas RPG Con 17 - 4 to 9 June 2025

NTX17 is---from my point-of-view, at least---just around the corner, in particular since free event  registration opens on 15 April 2025 at , a mere 11 days from when I've begun typing these words.  (And it's now one day after registration as I'm reviewing the above words.  So much for timely ;) ).

Due to the chaos of being of late, I only completed my NTX events submissions very early  on Thursday morning, 3 April 2025.  I'll run three sessions of a new scenario set in my drowic Dark Markets setting:

LEGIO V – Operation: Prism Shards and Unbound Chains

Explore Kiradúvi Mancalënómirond – The Dark Markets, grodog’s new Greyhawk underworld setting:  a flourishing drowic trading hub at the conjunction of subterranean, riverine, and planar travel routes.  In Operation: Prism Shards and Unbound Chains, you are an allied crew of drow minor clan merchants scouring The Undersell—the Dark Markets’ annual secrets auction—to find and rescue a Tormtor turncoat on the run before assassins slay the renegade, or she sells her secrets to the highest bidder.  If you succeed, you will elevate yourselves and your clans in power, and perhaps rise to head new noble houses, while aiding the downfall of the reviled Eilservs-Tormtor coalition; should you fail, your souls will pounded from your bodies by Abyssal goristroi—or worse!

Bring your hex and graph paper, dice, and a Machiavellian dose of paranoid courage!  3rd-5th level pregen drowic PCs will be provided.

Content Warning:  Gary Gygax’s seminal introduction of the drow to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons portrays their culture and society as chaotic and evil—drow are demon-worshipping villains who actively engage in slavery, torture, and human sacrifice.  The setting in this scenario leverages and extends that baseline depiction into the underworld markets that support and slake their lusts to demonstrate that drow are the antithesis for all that is good in the world:  in both our—real—world, as well as in the World of Greyhawk fantasy game setting.  This includes the pregen PCs and their masters.

New Toys and Reviews

A detailed run-down on these must await another follow-up post, but that should also land sooner vs. later.  (I do discuss the Greyhawk-related titles a bit below).

In the meanwhile, here's my loot-fan from the convention to help tide you over!:

Loot captured at GaryCon by the grodog---
did he level up yet??

This includes a host of excellent tomes and wondrous sundries, including:

  • A cornucopia of Greyhawk- and Blackmoor-related riches from Rob Kuntz, Lenard Lakofka, Carlos Lising, Will Dvorak, Michael Mossbarger's reproduction of Eric Shook's rendered Castle Greyhawk level 1 map (which he DM'd this year and provided with as a historical handout), Paul Stormberg's tournament (I worked for this one ;) ), and a pile of seven new-to-me, 3e-era Greyhawk novels gifted to me by David "diaglo" Temporado
  • New fiction!  From the Goodman Games booth across the aisle, I bought two Gardner Fox novels one of which I didn't already own (One Sword for Love), and grabbed of copy of Kurt "thank you for killing my clone" Winter's debut novel, The Hero's Fall.
  • The latest and greatest from Alex Bates and Shayla Sackinger:  new miniatures (these two resin pieces accompany the huge John Dennet dragon turtle I bought previously, but I apparently forgot to include the new metal goblins I bought too---rats!), the new adventures The Twin Heads of Avarice (a great title!; this is a full module) and The Awful Amber Doom (a one-sheet dungeon|folder-adventure|thingy), and some very yummy birch caramels (which my wife and boys also enjoyed, thanks Alex!)
  • And some other curious sundries:
    • A nearly-pristine Shure SM57 microphone from David Prata for my older son Ethan, the musician
    • On Tyrrany, an all-too-timely gift from Victor Raymond
    • A new zine from Noah Davidson, in two different formats; "Welcome to Halishaft" may the title of the zine, or of its introduction, but it looks like a fun project either way!
    • A flyer for a new D&D museum being planned by Jim and Debbie Hunton:  see https://museumofdnd.com/ for more information

Greyhawk News, Both New and Old

I fully intend to catch up on my curated Greyhawk news postings, which by now will be quite out-of-date in most instances, but those that still make the cut will confirm that they were well-worth awaiting:

In the short-term, though, the following news items are definitely worthy of mention:
  • The Lenard Lakofka Archive published two new modules at GaryCon:  LAB1 The Lanthorn of Velzarkis (Dan Boggs finished the adventure from Lenard's notes) and RL1 The Ravages of the Mind

I've not had a chance to dig into LAB1 yet, but I playtested RL1 when Josh Popp ran it  at Virtual GaryCon #3, in 2002.

Many thanks to Troy Alleman of Caanibaal Publishing for kindly gifting me a print copy of RL1 at the show!

  • Rob Kuntz's new adventure, Into the Wild Blue Yonder: A Journey Through Blackmoor’s Dark Realm, which he designed for and ran at DaveCon 2 back in the fall of 2024, was published by Griff and Chris, The Fellowship of the Thing crew behind the excellent Secrets of Blackmoor documentary.

Unfortunately I missed Rob's first visit to the USA since his departure a decade ago, but I hope to catch up with him when he returns next :D

  • Trent "TFoster" Smith just published his new campaign, Brink of Calamity via his Storm Fetish Productions publishing imprint.  (My print copy arrived finally on 16 April 2025!).

In the sandbox style of Griffin Mountain, Brink of Calamity is set in and around Warnell (Narwell in the Wild Coast of Greyhawk).  I'd hoped to playtest some of its scenarios in my current Greyhawk campaign, but the PCs' excursions to Dyvers didn't lead to entanglements I expected, so that opportunity didn't arise quite yet!

Trent also has the new campaign book available in a bundle with his Heroic Legendarium book, which we've been using for a few years now in the current campaign:  we have both a single-classed bard and a savant among the PCs.

  • I finally met William “Giantstomp” Dvorak, and he graciously gave me a copy of his Wicked StudiosRavensrook sourcebook, and provided several copies to share with other Greyhawk fans who came by the booth, too!

I love helping other Greyhawk fans find books and resources for their games, and several of the folks who walked off with Will's book hadn't been aware of his work yet :D

  • Vince Garcia continues to publish his monthly zine Gary World in the files section of the First Edition AD&D (Gygaxian AD&D) Facebook group.  The group is private, so you'll need to request membership to join, and Vince publishes the zine PDFs to the files section for a week or so, then removes them.  But they're worth the wait!

The Crews:  They Keep Me Going

The gatherings of friends and my immediate and extended "gamer family" at GaryCon remind me of how much I love the company of fellow gamers.  I had planned to take more pictures while wandering around the con, the exhibitor hall, in my games, and of games that caught my eye, but I did little photoging, as seems usual these past few years....

I enjoyed wonderful, but always too-short, conversations this year with Doug Waltman, Erik Mona, John O'Neill, Jon Peterson, Matt Finch and Suzy Moseby (including the almost-conversation on Monday morning, had we only known!), and Jay Scott:  they refract among my memories throughout the con.  Longer and deeper ones with Victor Raymond, Paul Stormberg and Doug Behringer, Carlos Lising and Jeremy Breazeale, and Kit at GreyhawkOnline rise above the haze, demanding follow-up....

L to R:  Keith Sloan, grodog, and
Tony "Wheggi" Rosten

I was an unexpected delight to discover and meet Rick Meints at the Chaosium booth---we've corresponded together on YSDC, The Acaeum, and Facebook for years, but this was the first time we met.  I was somewhat dazed from my walk through the hall at the time, but we managed through that.  Rick graciously gifted me a Chaosium 50th anniversary pin, which will I will proudly add to my badge lanyard for North Texas in June :D

Thank You!

My thanks to Luke and Bouchura Gygax, Josh Popp, Dave Conant, Gilbert Ganse, and the innumerable volunteers who bring GaryCon to life each year.  You're keeping the flame alive, and the con vibrant and filled with fun!

To Rich Franks and Victor Raymond for helping out in the booth so that Jon and I could step away from it, and Joe Mac and [another kind person I've lost track of in my hazy memory :( ] for their help in packing up the booth on Sunday.

To the many friends from online forums, discords servers, publishers, communities, previous  conventions, and the games I've played in and DM'd who I look forward to catching up with each year:  you are why I keep coming back!

Allan.

grodog's Thank YOUs and Appreciations!

My attendance at both Founders & Legends and GaryCon was supported by a number of important folks, without some of whom I would literally have not been able to be there*.

GaryCon XVI convention logo

Therefore, I'd like to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to:
  • Luke and Bochura Gygax, for managing both conventions, providing my F&L badge (and other folks in the Legio V who ran many games supporting the 50th anniversary extra weekend), and for making the conventions appear smooth and easy!
  • Robert Brandon, for graciously inviting me to share his B&B for F&L, which was conveniently situated next door to Gary's old house at 330 Center Street, and without which I would not have been able to attend F&L at all
  • Joe Kline, for graciously providing a PC for my use after the convention
  • Rich Franks, for his unexpected help in manning the Black Blade booth, for wrangling the Legio V cats, and for delivering Joe's donated PC
  • Victor Raymond, for yet-again splitting a room at GaryCon, continuing excellent company, and good conversations before, throughout, and after the conventions
  • Jon Hershberger, my business partner in Black Blade Publishing over the past 15 years, for his hard work before, during, and after our conventions that goes largely unrecognized
Among the Greyhawk and convention communities, I'd like to thank:
  • Darlene, for her wonderful and continuing to inspire artwork, and for signing my now-five-year-old niece's coloring book (she loved it!! :D )
  • Tony Rosten, for trekking down to Lake Geneva on Friday evening during F&L, inviting  and treating Robert and I to dinner, and for breathing a new hope into our mega-dungeon zine, The Twisting Stair (work on issue #4 begins in May!)
  • Carlos Lising and the Wednesday night “Wolves of St. Cuthbert” crew---Greg, Danny, Triet, Dan, Nick, and Jeremy---for a fun off-grid game, picking up where we left off 2 years ago, and to Carlos for the gift of two of his unpublished modules, a casl Entertainment tote bag, and for all of the Greyhawk inspiration that he creates and shares with the community year-in and year-out
  • The Lenard Lakofka Archive crew---Anna, Jay, Josh, Lee, Troy, David, Dan, Rich, and the rest of the Lakofka Archive crew for the two new Lakofka adventures modules, now freely available for download (with more in the pipeline!)
  • Paul Stormberg of The Collector's Trove, TLB Games, and Legends of Roleplaying (and Wargaming!) and his ever-helpful partner in gaming, Kevin Maurice,  for squeezing me into the museum game (my 2nd time in Rob’s boreal level, 1st at NTX in 2019)
  • Jay Scott (who streamed live throughout GaryCon, including the Legends & Lore seminar show with Mike and Anna), Kristoph Nolen, Mike Bridges, Joe Bloch, Troy Alleman's Cannibaal Publishingand the multitudinous World of Greyhawk fan community for keeping the setting alive through continuing content creation, sharing, and support via Canonfire!, Greyhawk Online and The Oerth Journal, The Grey Grimoire, Visions of Greyhawk, Virtual Greyhawk Con (4-6 October 2024!), and so much more :D
  • Jim Kitchen for securing the means for future grodog's escapes, and continuing to spread the good word!
  • Ed Greenwood, for kindly signing my copies of The Grand History of the RealmsSecrets of the Sages, and The Dragon #37 (somehow I couldn't find my copy previously-signed by Gary way back at Lake Geneva Gaming Con #3 in 2007---I need to rummage around in my office more!); TD#37 contains Ed's seminal article, "From the City of Brass... to Dead Orc Pass... in One Small Step...:  The Theory and Use of Gates", which is one of my favorite articles ever published in Dragon Magazine
  • GaryCon volunteers Jeff MacKay, Mark (first time attendee, flew in from Wales!), Dirk Collins and his son, and a couple other folks for loading up my minivan on Sunday afternoon while I finished the last of the booth breakdown!  Thank you all:  that was the quietest, easiest Sunday afternoon I've had at GaryCon in ages :D
A warm thank you to the many players who chose to spend their precious conventioneering time in my games, providing feedback on the playtests, and continuing to surprise an old grodog who sometimes thinks he's seen all the tricks:

  • LEGIO V Presents: grodog's Castle Greyhawk

Lastly, my eternal thanks to my family for supporting my fun and games, my publishing projects, and for putting up with my absence for a much longer time than usual this year!  All of my love to Heather, Ethan, and Henry (and Muffin and Felix too, who, being cats, probably didn't miss me very much ;) )!

The Glorious, the Goods, the Swag

Founders & Legends and GaryCon were fun and games, and some of that fun came home with me.  Highlights are pictured below, and included:

And that's a wrap---until next year! =)

grodog's Founders & Legends and GaryCon XVI Convention Reports - 14-25 March 2024 - Part 2

GaryCon XVI – 20-25 March 2024

Continued from Part 1 – Arrival through Founders & Legends and Interregnum Tuesday.

With the shift to Wednesday, this required the changing of the badges over from Founders & Legends to GaryCon:

Wednesday - 20 March

Booth Setup

I came into Wednesday having spent the day before hanging out and gaming, rather than driving cross-country, and I could definitely get used to that!  Robert Brandon graciously agreed to help me unload the minivan, and we arrived at the Forum for the 8am start of exhibitor check-in.  With Robert’s help, I was able to cede my spot at the loading dock by 8:45am or so, and to begin building the booth.

I had planned for a similarly-open booth design like how we’d set up last year, but this process is, unfortunately, more art than science, and it’s not something anyone who doesn’t know the planned layout and the products as a whole can really help much with.  So, after Robert and I rejockeyed the tables a few times, and with some reconfiguration and fine-tuning by swapping out tables with the able assistance of the hotel staff, the booth settled into its final form, and I thanked Robert and released him to rest of his day by 9:30 or 10am.

The Forum was reorganized this year, which was a bit of a surprise---I’d seen changes in the layout design, but they hadn’t quite clicked, given the relocation of the GaryCon merchandise to the back-right corner of the hall.  The big surprise (and a hugely positive change overall!) was the shifting of the throughways in the Forum to run the full length of the hall---this really opened the chamber up, and allowed gamers to see down the full length of the halls from the main entry doors.  That in turn gave better line-of-sight to vendors along the throughways, and helped to showcase the breadth and depth of products available at the show.

Black Blade Publishing and Our OSR Cornucopia

For those folks who are unfamiliar with Black Blade Publishing, we publish our own books (OSRIC, Monsters of Myth, Tales of Peril) modules (Rob Kuntz’s Bottle City, Cairn of the Skeleton King, Tower of Blood), and gaming tools (graph and hex paper pads from quarter-page size up to 17x22”).  However, our content only represents about 15% of the booth’s content footprint.

The remaining 85% is provided by third-party, old-school publishers, many of whom are friends and fellow old-school designers, including works from The Tekumel Foundation, North Wind Adventures, Gabor Lux’s E.M.D.T., Carlos Lising’s casl Entertainment, Paul Stormberg’s TLB Games and Legends of Roleplaying, OSRIC sourcebooks like Trent Smith’s Heroic Legendarium and Matt Finch’s Tome of Adventure Design, Swordfish Islands and Third Kingdom Games’ hexcrawls, and adventures from Anthony Huso, Jennell Jaquays, G. Hawkins, Paolo Greco, Robert Conley, Expeditious Retreat Press, and Goodman Games’ Original Adventures Reincarnated, among many others!

This year we brought many new-to-our-booth publishers and products to GaryCon, including the D&D documentary films Secrets of Blackmoor and The Dreams in Gary’s Basement, Merle Rasmussen’s new ally-friendly card game I Choose to Rise, Aron Clark’s Holmes & Clark clone (and his conversion of the classic level 1 adventure, “The Lichway”), Knave 2nd Edition, and last but certainly not least, Kelsey Dione’s ShadowDark.

I can't post a pictorial review of the booth because blogger's editor hates me, so here's one image from just before the opening on Thursday morning, about 9:15am or so:

I wrapped up the booth setup by 4pm or so, leaving a few placeholders in the shelves for product that had not quite made its way to the booth yet.

That left me free to finish moving out from 328 Center Street before the rest of Robert’s crew arrived, time to coordinate keys with Victor Raymond (my roommate again this year for GaryCon) and to bump into Carlos Lising and Erik Mona in passing at Jay Scott’s pre-con streaming show, and a peaceful interlude to find and eat some good food at the Chophouse while chatting with my wife and sons.

"The Wolves of St. Cuthbert"

After eating, Carlos and the redoubtable Jeremy Breazeale hussled us offsite to the second (?) annual gathering of “The Wolves of St. Cuthbert”—a reunion of the GaryCon 2022 campaign crew, which Carlos eloquently recounted as part of his GaryCon 16 Patreon summary.  As usual, I had a great time playing with Gregory, Danny, Nick, Dan, Triet, Jeremy, and Carlos, and I managed not to lose any dice this year, too ;)

Thursday - 21 March

The Exhibit hall opened early daily at 9am for special guests, VIPs, and Platinum+ badge holders, while exhibitors were able to enter to finish set-up starting at 8am.  I was able to visit for a bit with friends from the Acaeum (and Jim Kitchen graciously tracked down the last? set of GaryCon lockpicks at the main merch booth for me), and then the Forum doors opened wide.
The Thursday opening crowd proved to be the closest I’ve come to GenCon-level-chaos in nearly two decades.  On the plus side, Thursday morning was very busy from opening through about 12pm or so, which was great for business, but clearly showed the limits of what a one-human booth can manage.  Everyone was gracious and polite, but the long was long for quite some time….

We did sell out of some books even before opening on Thursday (two sets of Anthony Huso’s limited edition of Castle of the Silver Prince), which does happen when we have lower stock on more-expensive books, but I had to reshuffle the booth a few more times than usual during the rush.  ShadowDark flew off the shelves, quite literally, throughout the day, and the Knave 2e books arrived in time for opening too.  The rest of the day was thankfully less insane, and Rich Franks (our chief in the Legio V) lent a hand in the afternoon (and again on Friday and Sunday too), which was very appreciated!

Abyssal Rift 1

Thursday night I ran the first playtest for my high-level, aquatic “Abyssal Rift” adventure:

Playtest grodog's newest high-level adventure, exploring an aquatic wilderness in the World of Greyhawk. Your mission is to pursue a set of aquatic foes into their lair beneath the waves of the Azure Sea. The ixitxachitl have captured a sea-elven princess and plan to sacrifice her to Demogorgon at the next new moons, in three day's time!

Bring your hex and graph paper, dice, and a healthy dose of paranoid courage! 12th-17th level PCs will be provided, most with some form of aquatic survival (along with some house-ruled spell changes).

The GaryCon portion of the adventure used Mike Bridges' South Seas of Greyhawk map as the base adventuring environ, and I slapped together a quick hex grid on it using the overlay sheet from the Forgotten Realms grey box set:

Mike Bridges' South Seas of Greyhawk map + Forgotten Realms template = instant hex grid!
Mike Bridges' South Seas of Greyhawk map +
Forgotten Realms template = instant hex grid!

We played in Evergreen 2 in the dedicated Legio V and Legends of Roleplaying room, which ended up being where I ran all of my GaryCon games.  The PCs accomplished their mission in spite of a somewhat slow start on my part, and the noise level in the room making it difficult to hear at times (one of the players left early due to a noise-induced headache).

Friday - 22 March

More Booth

The craziness of Thursday morning opening did not reassert itself, and Friday remained steadily busy, which was wonderful on both counts---plenty of time to socialize with friends and to help customers find the X-level adventure or the new setting or the new zines or the documentaries, et al, that they sought.

As with Thursday, Rich Franks came by and helped me out a bit, which allowed me to eat some food and take a bathroom break (not necessarily in that order; thanks Rich!).

Sales were brisk, and some product definitely began to ran low or out completely---many of Melan’s newest zines and adventures, including Castle Xyntillan, and the leatherbound sets of Hyperborea 3rd edition.  And by the end of the day, we had both documentary films in the booth---Secrets of Blackmoor and The Dreams in Gary’s Basement---as well as The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg, too.

Paul’s Legends of Roleplaying Tourney

Every year for the past several Paul Stormberg has run a large (the largest?) tournament at GaryCon.  The past few years have been themed around exploring the Temple of Elemental Evil, and this year’s tourney capstoned that series, as the PCs attempted to bring battle to the Elder Elemental God itself!

Similar to previous years, this year’s scenario included some challenging puzzles, but the overall adventure was more streamlined, which allowed more time to work through its challenges, as well as more time to complete the adventure.  My crew of players were all veterans of both the tournament format and of the ToEE background and environs (several played last year).  They fared well during the initial encounters, but were stymied in a puzzle room that permitted three of the PCs to pass relatively unscathed, but which damaged the rest of the party when they attempted to follow.  In the end, they wisely decided to split the party while working through the logic of the puzzle, which permitted the first group to advance to the semi-final encounter.  They were joined by one of the other PCs toward the end of the round’s time, and those PCs were literally saved by the bell---my phone timer went off as I was picking up handfuls of d8s to hit the four PCs with three flamestrikes, which would have insured their doom (dead PCs aren’t worth points in the tourney scoring).

In the end, they ranked in the middle of the teams, with 100 points.  Paul’s tournament summary and the final scoring results are posted to the GaryCon blog at https://garycon.com/the-legends-of-role-playing-tournament-results/.

Saturday - 23 March

Yet-More Booth

Saturday saw more of books sell-through, including all of the copies of the ShadowDark rules and zines that we had available—we tried to finagle another shipment to the convention, but it wasn’t feasible, unfortunately.  They were gone by noon.

On the plus side, Saturday brought a restock from Carlos Lising with new casl Entertainment adventures, and Merle Rasmussen brought copies of his new game, I Choose to Rise, just released in February 2024 for Black History Month.

Abyssal Rift 2, Hollywood Style

My last game of the convention was my second run-through of Abyssal Rift.  I was able to tweak the introductory portion of the scenario a bit to provide more concrete guidance to the players, which got them started in earnest a bit more quickly than Thursday night’s crew.

And what players!—I knew two of them already (Aron Clark, who plays in my regular group, and John Roberts, who I played Titan with during F&L), but five of the remaining six were Hollywood friends of Luke’s:  Vince Vaughn, Tom Morello, Paul Wight, Dan Weiss, and Joe Manganiello; with Greg Joseph rounding us out at eight.

I was somewhat nervous about DMing celebrities, but it worked out fine in the end:  they all acquitted themselves well in the south seas of Greyhawk, and accomplished their mission to locate the ixitxachitl lair in time to prevent the sacrifice of the sea olven princess.  (They did employ some non-standard cooperative tactics inspired by 5e mechanics, which we improved within fine).  Afterward we hung around a bit chatting about Greyhawk and its history (including some basic questions about what is Greyhawk, that they had to reign me back a bit in my responses), and the history of Dave and Gary’s work together before they took a group picture with Luke and headed off.

Sunday - 24 March

Closing Out the Booth

On Sunday the Forum was only open until 2pm (although I think I was still closing out the our last transactions around 2:30pm), and as with Friday and Saturday, sales were steady but not crazy.  The time went by quickly, all-in-all, and before I knew it the hall was starting to shut down.

Thanks to our voluminous sales, I was able to pack the booth up and—through the assistance of some very determined GaryCon volunteers who wouldn’t take “no really, I can manage” for an answer:  Dirk Collins and his son, Mark from Wales, and Jeff MacKay; they loaded my minivan completely!!-- get out of the hall by 6pm!  Perhaps a GaryCon first for me! :D

Empty booth!
Empty booth!

The spoils of victory---empty boxes!
The spoils of victory---empty boxes!

Afterward, I gratefully grabbed a burger at the Chophouse bar, and had a fun dinner discussion with another GaryCon attendee, who opened our chat with the gambit, “Your favorite and least-favorite mega-dungeons?”  Only at GaryCon :D :D

Legio V Board Meeting

While packing up the booth closed out the Black Blade books for the show, there was still business to attend to.  Each year after GaryCon the DMs of the Legio V gather to commune with the winds of GaryCons present, past, and future by invoking the Genevan mysteries through rituals of haruspicy and the sacrifice of slain character sheets, conducted by Dionysian celebrants.

This year’s meeting ran a bit longer than usual—from 7:30pm until 10pm or so—and I retired soon thereafter, as I was exhausted from the very busy long weekend, unfortunately missing out on both the celebration and the Hyperborea adventure that Del had prepared :-/

And that's a wrap!

I crashed early on Sunday night, and slept well into Monday, which closed out another fabulous GaryCon.

I'll conclude in part three with my Thank You acknowledgements and convention loot and swag!

Allan.
